Combining idle mechanics with tower defense was not an obvious choice. Both genres work well on their own. Merging them required solving problems neither genre solves individually. This piece walks through the reasoning.
The case for combination
Idle and tower defense are complementary. Idle excels at offline progression and respecting fragmented attention. Tower defense excels at active strategy and tactical depth. Combined, they cover the full range of how people actually use mobile devices.
A player on a five-minute break gets meaningful idle gains. A player on a long couch session gets active strategic play. Neither feels like the wrong way to engage.
What we gained
Three things. First, broader audience: pure tower defense players who want offline progress, and pure idle players who want active depth, both have something to engage with.
Second, longer retention: the active layer creates moments of mastery; the idle layer creates anticipation between sessions. Together, they sustain engagement longer than either alone.
Third, deeper systems: the active and idle layers can interact. Active decisions affect idle output. Idle progress amplifies active capability. The feedback loop is richer than either layer would be alone.
What we had to solve
The hardest problem: making sure active play feels meaningfully better than idle without making idle feel pointless. See our devlog on idle progression design for how we landed on the 60% idle ratio.
Second hardest: keeping the active strategic depth genuine when much of the game runs while you are away. Our solution: four divine god systems that fundamentally change how active matches play.
Third: avoiding the trap of being neither. A bad combination is just a watered-down version of both genres. We had to commit to making both layers genuinely good.
Did it work
Beta data suggests yes. Players are engaging with both layers. Active-play retention is healthy. Idle-only players are progressing without feeling left out. The combination is delivering on its promise.
