This is the first devlog for Lost Tower. We have been building this game for over a year. Here is the why: the frustrations that started us, the bets we made, the things we wanted to prove. Written by the team.

Direct answer

We started Lost Tower because we believed the idle tower defense genre on mobile had become extractive when it could have been depth-rich. We wanted to build a version of the genre we would actually want to play, on a small budget, as proof that mobile idle TD can be ambitious. This devlog covers the why.

The frustration

Most of the team had been playing idle tower defense games for years before we started building one. We loved the genre. We were also frustrated by it. Almost every top-charting mobile idle TD game was built around extraction: stamina systems, paywall progression, predatory cosmetics that secretly granted power, daily login pressure designed to manipulate.

The genre had become a vehicle for monetization rather than a vehicle for play. And we thought players were ready for something different.

The bet

We bet that a free-to-play idle tower defense with no pay-to-win, no energy systems, no manipulative tactics, could find an audience large enough to sustain the studio. We bet that players were tired of being treated as wallets. We bet that depth, when it is real, generates retention more reliably than manipulation.

The bet is still being tested. Beta data is encouraging. Launch will tell us more.

The principles

Three principles guided every decision:

  • Player time is sacred. Five minutes should feel productive. Fifty minutes should feel meaningful.
  • Strategy decides outcomes. Not the wallet. Strategy.
  • Identity matters. Lost Tower has a world and four gods because we believed the genre needed more than damage types.

The risks

We took several risks. The biggest: refusing to monetize aggressively. This may cap our revenue ceiling. We accept that. The second-biggest: investing heavily in lore and identity. This costs development time. We believe it is worth it.

The third risk: shipping mobile-first rather than going for PC parallel. We made this choice because we believe mobile is where idle TD lives. Whether it pays off, time will tell.

Where we are now

Lost Tower is in beta. The core systems work. The four gods are playable. The progression layers interact the way we hoped. The community on Discord is growing. We have a long way to go, but the foundation is real.
